2010 Season Review

Another cricket season draws to a close and we can claim that this has been one of the best of recent years. We played 18 games, won 8, drew 3, and one game against Tangmere resulted in a tie with both teams recording exactly the same total. Only six losses were recorded

The highlights have been Jack Dimond’s 101 not out against Milland, Oliver King’s intelligent 70 against Bosham to secure a draw, Harry Dimond’s108 not out against Tillington and his 91 against Arundel, Andy Long’s aggresive 56 to beat Bury, Paul Phillips 4 for 38 against Storrington, Graham Braithwaite’s 101 not out against Fittleworth and his 85 not out against Parham Park, Alfie Bunkers 96 not out against Fittleworth and Richard Gough’s 64 against Grayswood. There has been steady support from James Hickey, Matt Hall, Andy Wilson-Smith, Paul Phillips, Dave Clarke, Lee Ayres, Jon Clifford and Nick Bellion.

It is probably true to say that Lodsworth, once better known for their bowling prowess have now become more of a batting team. It was once the case that a score of 150 runs was regarded as par for two and half hours in the field but on five occasions this year Lodsworth scored in excess of 200 runs and in two other games scored more than 300 runs.

But increasingly, having batted first and amassed a large score the village team were unable to capitalise on this and bowl the opposition out. Thus Arundel and Tillington were able to eke out a draw and Parham Park won in the last over even though Lodsworth had put 205 runs on the board. Put another way we could have won three more games if the bowlers had a little more success. Only skipper Andy Long has excelled with the ball this year although Paul Phillips turned in a particularly strong performance against Storrington.

We won mostly against genuine village Sunday XI’s and lost against teams with a strong League contingent in their line-up namely Loxwood, Goodwood, Storrington, West Chiltington and the Cricket Society. But it is good that the village team is playing better opposition for only in that way will we improve. We also have more ‘village people’ in the team with Rob Collins and Fergus Cruikshank playing regularly and cameo performances by Richard Gough, Finn Campbell, Tom Atkins and Gerry Keen. The tail-enders were occasionally called on to add a few runs and Bob Powell, Pete Long and on one occasion John King did this with alacrity.

Apart from the success on the field Paul Phillips is to be congratulated on the quality of the wicket at the Recreation Ground. Over the last five years it has improved enormously under Paul’s stewardship and is now as good as any we play on, including the grounds of League clubs that have full-time groundsmen. The facilities of the club include an excellent practice strip with artificial turf and nets and a newly acquired catching cradle. The sightscreens enhance the quality of the game and again are a bonus that most village teams cannot aspire to. All of this we could not have achieved without the generous help of our sponsors and vice presidents. The outfield is also much improved as a result of regular mowing organised by the Recreation Hall Committee.

And finally a big thankyou to John King our Chairman, Secretary and Fixture Secretary and to Jill King. It is probably true that cricket in Lodsworth would not have survived in the last decade without John’s enthusiasm for the game and Jill King organises a group of ladies (and occasionally gentlemen) including Zena Davies, Teggy Phillips, Vikki Braithwaite and Gillian Johnson who serve the finest cricket teas in Sussex.

I have an admission to make – your scribe and sometimes wicket keeper did not take a catch all season. Is this a record for a wicket keeper in any class of cricket? In mitigation he did stop numerous byes with various parts of his anatomy.

Dad’s Army

Lodsworth CC v The Cricket Society
at Lodsworth, Sunday 26th September 2010

Lodsworth CC 52 all out (Andy Long 17, Oliver King 9,  Bob Powell 8; N Holmes 7 overs 4 for 12, P Holland 7 overs 3 for 9)
The Cricket Society 54 for 3 ( T Crocket 27, A Gale 17 not out; D Clarke 8 overs 1 for 26, Andy Long 6 overs 1 for 15, Mat Hall 2.2 overs 1 for 9)

Severely weakened by the departure of all their young players – Graham Braithwaite to University of Wales, Harry Dimond to Leeds University, and Alfie Bunker and Nick Bellion back at Seaford College – Lodsworth were forced to mobilise Dad’s Army for the last game of the 2010 season. And so Pete, the father of skipper Andy Long, John the father of Ollie King and Bob Powell the father of three and grandfather of four children (none of whom have the slightest interest in cricket) found themselves defending the honour of the village. Suffice to say the combined age of the number 9, 10 and 11 batsmen was 198.

The Cricket Society are no spring chicken’s either but they had a wealth of experience and set a very intimidating field that rattled the Lodsworth batsmen who fell like skittles to a lot of daft catches. Andy Long top scored with 17 runs but the highlight of the game was seeing John King strapping on his pads and together with Bob Powell adding 13 for the last wicket to bring the Lodsworth total to 52 all out

With a fine drizzle threatening heavier rain The Cricket Society went straight out to bat and they were never in danger of failing to pass the Lodsworth score, indeed they did so for the loss of just 3 wickets shortly before tea.
After a magnificent spread served by Zena and Mike Davies the two teams decided to venture out again for a 10-over ‘beer match’, which Lodsworth managed to win thereby recuing some pride. Thereafter “ Dad’s Army descended on the Hollist Arms where the club President was prevailed upon to provide a free round of chips to celebrate the end of a relatively successful season.

A Dose of Gough Medicine

Lodsworth CC v Grayswood CC
At Grayswood, Sunday 19th September 2010.

Grayswood 158 for 8 off 40 overs  (S Peet 56 not out, D Grundy 27; Dave Clark 8 overs 3 for 23, Andy Long 8 overs 2 for , F Cruikshank 8 overs 3 for 23) )
Lodsworth 159 for 4 off 26 overs (Richard Gough 64, Andy Long 57 not out
Lodsworth Won

Grayswood CC who had impressively racked up five successive victories in their last five games were the hosts to Lodsworth on the 19th September. Paul Phillips, the stand in skipper won the toss and elected to bowl first in a limited 40 overs-a-side friendly. Grayswood started off at a frantic pace, adding 31 for the first wicket in only six overs. However, Dave Clarke bowled a superb yorker removing the key wicket of C Kent (20) to stem the flow of runs.  Both Fergus Cruickshank and Andy Long bowled steady line and length limiting Grayswood to 61-4 after 18 overs. D Grundy and T White added 30 for the fifth wicket, before Clarke bowled Grundy by hitting the top of off stump. James Hickey took a sublime catch whilst wicket keeping and Grayswood looked to be in trouble at 116-7. Young S Peet was next to the crease and after a slow start hit some lusty blows for a superb 56 off only 45 balls. Lodsworth might have ended his innings very early on, but for a few senior moments in the field with three dropped catches going by the wayside. L Shoham was run out on the last ball of the innings, as Grayswood finished their allotted 40 overs on 158-8. A special mention must go to Oliver King who fielded well.

Lodsworth opened with Richard Gough & John Clifford who faced the fast bowling of Peet and Wilson. Clifford (9) looked to take the lead with two lusty fours before being bowled. Matt Hall joined Gough at the crease and they hit a crucial 52 for the second wicket before Jackson dismissed Hall (14) and Hickey (1) in quick succession to leave Lodsworth 87-3. With the game back in the balance, Gough, with his classy shots and Andy Long with his forearm ‘tennis shot’ smashes took the game away from Grayswood with a quick-fire partnership of 56. Gough was eventually caught behind for 64. Needing only 16 runs, young Christian came to the crease and defended 3 balls for a not out while Long with four boundaries in five balls quickly wrapped the game up and reached 57 not out with 14 overs to spare.

Overall a resounding victory under the dictatorship, sorry I meant directorship, of Paul Phillips. Well done Paul!

Country House Party

Lodsworth CC v Parham Park CC
At Parham House, 5th September 2010

Lodsworth CC 205 for 6 off 42 overs (Graham Braithwaite 85 not out, Andy Wilson-Smith 43, Harry Dimond 26, Matt Hall 24; Fraser 7 overs 2 for 36)
Parham Park CC 207 for 2 off 39 overs (M Williams 114 not out, B Huffer 52; Andy Long 14 overs 2 for 69)
Lodsworth Lost

Two weeks without a game and Lodsworth were eager to play. Parham Park is a wonderful venue with Parham House, an Elizabethan mansion built in 1577, forming the background to the game. That said the pitch is a little dodgy as rabbits occasionally exit from burrows on the boundary and on previous occasions we have had to halt the game as deer appeared behind the bowlers arm.

Lodsworth batted first and after a stuttering start picked up momentum with Graham Braithwaite and Andrew Wilson-Smith enjoying a long 5th wicket partnership. Graham finished just short of a century with 85 not out and
Andrew, back from holiday in Australia, was just short of a half-century with 43. Matt Hall weighed in with 24, and Harry Dimond hit a swift 26. Lodsworth went in for tea with a comfortable total of 205 for 6 on the board.

But Parham Park is a much-strengthened team this season and the opening batsman proved difficult to dislodge. A recurring problem this season has been Lodsworth’s inability to bowl out the opposition having batted first and set a defendable target. Andy Long has been the only consistent bowler. Parham managed to reach the target of 206 for the loss of just two wickets, with five balls of the last over remaining. As Jim Hickey succinctly put it in the bar of The Crown pub after the game, “A good game of cricket – a pity we lost.”

Lodsworth Fall Short

Storrington CC v Lodsworth CC
At Storrington July 18th 2010.
Storrington 149 for 7 off 36 overs (Paul Phillips 13 overs 4 for 38, Andy Long 12 overs 2 for 37, Harry Dimond 3 overs 1 for 26).
Lodworth 89 all out (Oliver King 26, Bob Powell 12, Graham Braithwaite 11)
Lodsworth Lost

This was new fixture for Lodsworth CC. Storrington CC run two League teams and a Sunday Xl, which gives some indication of the strength of the opposition. On a dry, fast outfield Lodsworth won the toss and decided to bowl. This proved to be a wise decision as Andy Long and Paul Phillips swiftly made inroads into the top order. Indeed Phillips had their opener out on the third ball and then nailed three more with catches by Matt Hall, Graham Braithwaite and a stunning backwards dive from Lee Ayres. The home team was in real trouble at 35 for 5. But Storrington had two or three League players in the lower order and this began to tell as 35 for 5 went to 120 for 6. Phillips and Long were brought back on and the home team finished on 149 for 7 off 36 overs.

After a fantastic tea Lodsworth had to switch their batting order due to injuries and one batsman having to leave early. Matt Hall and Lee Ayres opened against a formidable bowling lineup and Hall was soon out to a dubious LBW that hit his hip. In at number 3 came Bob Powell (the usual number 11). The first three balls he received all went to the boundary and the fourth took out his middle stump. After dogged play by Harry Dimond and Graham Braithwaite Lodsworth were like Storrington on 38 for 5 but in the end the opposition class showed and wickets fell regularly. It was up to Long and Oliver King to attempt to bat out the last 11 overs to salvage a draw. They almost made it with King on 26 and Long on 6 but with four overs to go King was out LBW. Lodsworth were all out for 89 although the score line does not paint a full picture. Storrington were unquestionably the better team but Lodsworth were not outplayed.

Curry fails to produce runs

Lodsworth CC v West Chiltington CC
At Lodsworth 15th August 2010

West Chiltington CC 246 for 6 B Llewelyn 51, J Denton 46; Andy Long 13 overs 2 for 31, Dave Clarke 15 overs 2 for 94)
Lodsworth CC 116 all out (Andy Long 46, Oliver King 16; J Tolman 5 overs 3 for 15))
Lodworth Lost

The Vice Presidents lunch is not the best preparation for a game against West Chiltington, who boast an Australian semi-professional among their ranks and who are arguably our strongest opponents of the year. The excellent VP’s curry lunch provided this year by The Hollist Arms, with accompanying wine and beer, left most players listless.

Put into bat West Chiltington made the most of some slack fielding and missed catches to amass 246 runs for the loss of six wickets off 41 overs. The Lodsworth bowlers toiled but only Andy Long and Dave Clark were able to claim two wickets apiece and that at a heavy cost in runs.

A state of lassitude settled upon the whole Lodsworth team after an excellent tea prepared by Vikki Braithwaite, Zena Davies and Jill King. The opponents included some extremely fast bowlers with three slips and a gully so that wickets fell with monotonous regularity to a succession of catches. The tail briefly wagged with Andy Long storming to 46 and Rob Collins and Bob Powell hanging around for a few overs. But the end was inevitable and Lodsworth finished on 116 all out. However it can be confirmed that the curry from the Hollist Arms does not produce the runs.

Arundel Castle pulls up the drawbridge

Lodsworth CC v Arundel Grasshoppers CC
At Lodsworth 8th August 2010.

Lodsworth CC 300 for 4 off 40 overs (Harry Dimond 91, James Hickey 54, Alfie Bunker 54 not out, Graham Braithwaite 43 not out, Matt Hall 38)
Arundel Castle Grasshoppers 152 for 2 off 41 overs (James Hickey 3 overs 1 for 17, Rob Collins 3 overs 1 for 12)
Match Draw
n

Put in to bat against the visiting side of Arundel Grasshoppers, Lodsworth’s openers capitalized on some wayward bowling with 17 runs off the first over. Hall and Hickey raced to 42 off the first 4 overs before Matt Hall spooned a catch to second slip while James Hickey made the most of some bad fielding and dropped catches to reach 54 before being given out LBW. Harry Dimond looked at ease at the crease and with some huge 6’s increased the pressure before being caught on 91 just nine runs short of his second century of the season. Alfie Bunker piled on the agony with 54 not out while Rod Taylor, on vacation from Muscat Oman played his favourite 6 to cow-corner before being bowled. With Arundel on the ropes Graham Braithwaite delivered the knockout with 43 in 15 balls, at which point with the score 300 for 4 off 40 overs, Andy Long declared.

After a delightful tea prepared by Vikki Braithwaite and Zena Davies Lodsworth took to the field determined to storm the fortress Arundel. Andy Long gave all the outfielders an opportunity to bowl, including Rob Taylor’s son Jake, but the Castle Xl were intent on withstanding the siege and effectively pulled up the drawbridge. Only Rob Collins and James Hickey were able to penetrate the defences and Arundel finished on 152 for 2 off 41 overs to claim a draw.

Fittleworth Blitzed

Fittleworth CC v Lodsworth CC
At Fittleworth August 1st 2010
Lodsworth CC 301 for 3 declared (Graham Braithwaite 101rtd, Alfie Bunker 96 not out, Matt Hall 35, Harry Dimond 33, Nick Bellion 25 not out; R Kitchener 6 overs 2 for 39).
Fittleworth CC 144 all out (M Hamilton 38 not out, L Kitchener 24: Finn Campbell 5 overs 2 for 9, Andy Long 7 overs 2 for 13, Matt Hall 4.2 overs 2 for 16)
Lodsworth Won

This was a decidedly uneven battle. Put in to bat Lodsworth gave notice of their intent with the No. 1 batsman Matt Hall (35) and the No. 3 Harry Dimond (33) pushing the score along at seven an over. The momentum was maintained when Graham Braithwaite came to the crease. After a brief period of ‘bedding in’ he proceeded to blitz the opposition with shots in all directions. He quickly made 101 before retiring whereupon the cudgels were taken up by Alfie Bunker who just missed out on a century with 96 not out, Andy Long having decided to retire at 5.00pm and coincidentally when Lodsworth passed 300. For Graham it was his maiden century for Lodsworth although he has recorded several others in his career. Nick Bellion weighed in with a steady contribution of 25 not out and Lodsworth finished with 301 for 3 in 2hrs 50 minutes, possibly their highest score ever in Sussex Rules cricket

Faced with the clearly impossible task of scoring 302 to win, Fittleworth’s strategy was immediately clear – put in the youngsters to soak up the bomarbdment and then play the battle-hardened Kitchener brothers at No. 10 and 11 to ‘shut up shop’ and settle for a draw. And it almost worked – Andy Long had for his part, decided to give all ten outfielders a chance with the ball. This was good player management on Andy’s part for it ensured everyone had a part in the victory. Finn Campbell bowled a particularly fast spell but Lodsworth almost came unstuck as the game went right down to the final over from Matt Hall. With just four balls to go Matt got an outside edge from the elder Kitchener, Harry Dimond dived full length grabbing a one handed catch and Lodsworth were home and dry. Mention must be made of some fine catches by Nick Bellion, Matt Hall, Rob Collins and Finn Campbell and of course that match winning dive by Harry.

A Briliant Barbecue

Lodsworth CC v The Matt Hall Invitation XI
Sunday 25th July at Lodsworth

Lodsworth CC 256 for 7 ( Harry Dimond 50 not out, James Hickey 45 not out, Nick Bellion 35, Martin Howard 21; Matt Hall 5 overs  2 for 35, John Clifford 4 overs 2 for 21)

The Matt Hall XI 222 for 10 (Matt Hall 73 not out, Tom Davis 35, Jack Dimond 35; Fergus Cruikshank 5 overs 2 for 13, Paul Phillips 5 overs 2 for 41, Andy Long 4 overs 2 for 24)
Losdworth Won

The annual game against the Matt Hall XI is serious fun. Both teams fielded 12 players in this 40-over game, with eight of the Matt Hall Xl current or former Lodsworth players, so that almost all of the 2011 playing squad had an opportunity to show their skills. We were pleased to welcome back Martin Howard now a Master at Millfield College, Tom Davis (down from Oxford Brookes University), Harry Dimond (home for Leeds University). Veterans Joe Clifford and Pete Long were also  ‘up for it’ and it was a chance to wish farewell to Nick Bellion who is off to New Zealand for the summer to ski.

Lodsworth, captained by the newly elected Vice-Chairman of the Parish Council Paul Phillips, started confidently in scorching hot conditions but lost Rob Collins in the second over to a brilliant catch by Jack Dimond. However solid batting by Jack’s younger brother Harry (52 not out), James Hickey (45 not out) and Nick Bellion (35) contributed to a good all-round performance. Martin Howard (henceforth referred to as The Master from Millfield) contributed 21 and extras (wides and no balls) 40. Matt Hall bowled 5 overs 2 for 35 and John Clifford 4 overs 2 for 21, but the village team went in for tea well satisfied with a total of 256 for 7.

The Matt Hall Xl were ambitious and chased the runs. Tom Davis (35) and Jack Dimond (35) pushed the pace along but the main contribution came from skipper Matt Hall with 73 not out. The best of the bowlers were Fergus Cruikshank with 5 overs 2 for 13, Paul Phillips with 5 overs 2 for 41 and Andy Long 4 overs 2 for 24 and there were smart catches from Jerry Keane and James Hickey. The ‘visitors’ finished on 222 for 10.

The game was followed by a brilliant barbecue arranged by James Hickey who displayed his culinary skills from his days as landlord of the Lickfold Inn assisted by commis chef Fergus Cruikshank. The barbecue and a raffle with excellent prizes donated by members raised £90 for club funds and celebrated a season where Lodsworth are so-far unbeaten with a record of Played 9, Won 7, Drawn 1 with one match abandoned as a result of rain.

Flying Ant Attack

Graffham and Smithbrook CC v Lodsworth CC
At Graffham and Smithbrook 24th July 2010
Lodsworth CC 224 for 8 off 37 overs (G Braithwaite 84, Matt Hall 48, Nick Bellion 33; Rees 3 for 20).
Graffham and Smithbrooke 117 all out (McQueen 27: Graham Braithwaite 2 for 1, Matt Hall 2 for 10, Andy Long 2 for 31, Paul Phillips 3 for 43)
Lodsworth won

On a muggy day, Lodsworth CC were visitors to Graffham & Smithbrook CC. Fresh from scoring buckets of runs this year, Oliver King took to the crease with Lee Ayres and lasted all of 10 seconds before being caught at first slip with the first delivery of the innings. Rees (3 for 20) continued to bowl well dismissing both Harry Dimond (0) & Ayres (9) leaving Lodsworth stranded at 14 for 3. Graham Braithwaite & Nick Bellion unfazed by the sharp bowling built a platform to steady the innings. Braithwaite (84) showed a whole range of glorious shots and moved quickly to his 50 whilst Bellion (33) playing the anchor role, helped move the partnership to 100. Bellion was then bowled and this brought Matt Hall to the crease. Out of sorts for most of the season, Hall (48) set about the G & S bowling line up. Braithwaite was bowled 16 short of his century and Hall LBW 2 short of his half century.  Both Johnno Thompson (10 Not Out) and Fergus Cruikshank (18 Not Out) added important runs to close the innings for a respectable 224 for 8 off 37 overs.

What followed next caused great despair to the Graffham and Smithbrooke batsmen. Swarms of Flying Ants descended in their thousands at each end of the wicket. This made it impossible for the batsman to concentrate whilst they were being bitten alive. Lodsworth gained two quick wickets, before the game was stopped and evasive action taken by the umpires turned pest controllers.  Long (2 for 31) took the key wicket of McQueen (27) whilst Phillips (3 for 43) finished with a flurry. At 76 for 5, G & S looked like they would play for the draw with 14 overs left. But Hall (2 for 10), Bellion (1 for 7) and Braithwaite (2 for 1) wrapped up the innings with 4 overs to go. Graffham & Smithbrook finished 117 all out.

This was a very good result with many of the Graffham & Smithbrook team playing league standard in the Village Cup where they stand second in Division 2.
