Lodsworth won

A reorganization of fixtures in mid-week saw Horsham Trinity arrive for their first ever game with Lodsworth CC. A check on their website revealed they put out three Saturday teams in the Sussex Leagues and this is generally a good guide to the strength of the opposition. Winning the toss the visitors elected to bat but very accurate bowling from Dave Clarke and Andy Long kept them on a short leash and wickets fell at regular intervals. Andy (13 overs 3 for 14), Paul Phillips (7 overs 3 for 11) and Matt Hall (5 overs 3 for 24) took most of the wickets but impressive fast bowling by Finn Campbell also helped to restrict the scoring rate. Lodsworth also held onto the catches that were on offer – Harry Dimond (2), Bob Powell (2) Andy Long (1) and Lee Ayres (1) all had a hand in the dismissals.

Jill King and Vikki Braithwaite served up some tasty sandwiches cakes, scones and curried eggs (how refreshing a cup of tea is) before Lodsworth began the chase for runs. After the early loss of one opener, Oliver King and Dave Clarke doggedly built up a useful total. It was not particularly fast but it was effective. When Clarke (32) departed to a dodgy catch, Finn Campbell came to the crease and swiftly smote the ball to the boundary. More big hits followed in his innings of 32 not out including two towering sixes as Lodsworth cantered home with 99 for 2 off 26 overs. It was a convincing win for the village team who showed, not for the first time this season, that they are prepared to work hard for a victory.

The statistics now read Played 12   – Won 8, Drawn 2, Lost 1, with one abandoned due to heavy rain.
