England lost to India in dramatic fashion in the ICC Champions Trophy. Needing 20 from 16 balls with six wickets in hand they choked to loose by just five runs. Meanwhile Lodsworth CC also succumbed somewhat meekly to a new opponent Madehurst CC in a scheduled 40-over game.
Batting first the Lodsworth openers found it difficult to cope with the turn on the decidedly green wicket. Harry Dimond, James Hickey and Dave Clark all departed quickly and it was left to Graham Braithwaite to prop up the visitors with a resolute innings of 53, backed by skipper Paul Phillips with a flamboyant 20. Lodsworth staggered to a total of 125 all out off 32 overs – a sum that was always going to be hard to defend.
A sumptuous spread in Madehurst’s delightful new timber pavilion, set in a green bowl surrounded by yellow rape oil, preceded the Madehurst riposte. Only for a short period when the home team was five wickets down did a Lodsworth win look remotely possible but it was not to be. Dave Clark bowled tenaciously to take 2 wickets for 36 runs off 8 overs and Graham Braithwaite took one astonishing catch on the boundary but it was all over in just 27 overs.
Just time to return to the bar and watch the last rites being enacted at Edgbaston.
